Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Extraordinary TV Stars

They allegedly have abilities that set them apart from the rest of us mere mortals. A sixth sense that allows them to communicate or perceive by means other than the physical senses, and whether you are sceptic or believer they make for good television. Whats On profiles four participants of the 12th season of Ukrainian smash-hit show Bytva Ekstrasensiv (Battle of the Psychics) soon to be launched on STB channel. Will they predict our questions?

It is second only to X Factor in terms of ratings, raking in some 34 million viewers in Ukraine last season. Twelve seasons in, we ask what it is about psychics, spiritual healers, shamans, witches and the likes that keeps Ukrainians glued to their television sets.

Veronica German
The 12th season of Bytva Extrasensiv will be just another TV appearance for Veronica German as she has already been an invited psychic expert on various TV and radio shows in the US. Explaining why she decided to take part in the show, German says: Im extremely attracted by the popularity of this show. The most powerful psychics are taking part in it and I wanted to show my power and myself to the whole world!
German thinks that psychics are a mixture of innate ability and experience and every psychic has to learn how to deal with his or her talent. The gift of clairvoyance can lead its owner to insanity if managed improperly as it is a very powerful thing, she says.

Dilaram Saparova
A representative of Kazakhstan, Dilaram Saparova has already tested her abilities in a similar show in her country, and won. Moreover, in the 8th Season of the Russian version of the show, she took second place, making her pretty confident about her performance in Ukraine. Reality shows attract her as she thinks they are true to life and believes if you survive the stiff competition participants face in the show you can survive anything.
To achieve her successes, Saparova has had to be a real psychic: it is not something you can fake for long, she says. To be a psychic is a gift given from birth. Sadly she admits there are many people who fake it: Its a sin and God is their judge so lets not talk about it.

Benedict Lafler
Lafler works on radio and TV in his native Iceland and is well-known for more physical stunts namely his long distance swims  across the English Channel. He says about 20 years ago one powerful psychic predicted he would win a competition in a distant country inhabited by beautiful women: Now I understand what he was talking about, he tells us.
Explaining what attracts him to reality shows, he says it is because they are not a game. Speaking of his talent Lafler explains: I remember talking to invisible creatures when I was a child. I had my own world no one could get into. However, this world continues to exist for psychics even when they grow up.
Many times in his life he has faced scepticism but when he persuades people another world, magic, and numerology exist, the eyes of his listeners start to burn with eagerness to know more. Everyone believes in psychics and the paranormal, however not everyone can admit it. To spread his word, Lafler is open to anyone who wants to listen saying the main quality of a psychic is the readiness to help others.
In summary, Lafler warns people of fakes who want to make money from peoples misfortunes saying: I hate them and for sure hell expects them.

Ivan Dryhalo
This year, Ivan Dryhalo makes his debut on reality TV, but as a self-proclaimed fighter he confesses to being battle-ready. In fighting for the title of the best psychic, he believes he can show the world his unique gift and tick off another life challenge along the way.
Dryhalo is sure everyone has superpowers. However, inborn abilities play an important role too. Those abilities allow for tapping into mental and energetic forces faster. Although many people dont trust psychics, Dryhalo is sure that if a psychic is real and treats people kindly, then they will win trust. He believes fakes can be easily revealed by simply looking at the results of their work.

To see the psychic successes of the shows participants and find out whos a fake and whos not, well have to wait until the 12th season of Bytva Extrasensiv starting 6 October on STB.

    Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

    Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
