Famous the world over as an incredible cigar manufacturer, this Russian expat is now living in Germany, and coming to Kyiv for the Cigar Club’s Summer Big Smoke, that’s exactly where we found him.

Veronika Decides to Die is a drama film adapted from the novel of the same name by Paulo Coelho. The story centres on Veronika, a woman in her mid twenties who appears to have everything: good looks, good job and a great life ahead of her. Yet she decides to end her own life.

She is unsuccessful and instead awakens in a mental hospital where she learns that she has only a short time yet to live. In the hospital she meets people who are have become insane because they don’t follow society’s rules. And so with little left to lose, Veronika embarks on a journey on which she frees herself to experience relationships and emotions and ultimately discovers what it means to live.

In remembrance to the writer, playwright and carrier of that very name, Gogol’s influence as a creative force is recognised every September.
