And lucky enough to have a husband in television where such threads can be seen on his M1channel, Maryna Asaulyuk seems to be quite in love with Ukraine and all of the history that she sees as instrumental to her designs. At least that’s what she tells me when we meet for a chat in her studio in Podil.
Loving wife of Olexandr and mother to two great kids, Maryna Asaulyuk has become quite a public figure in Kyiv over the years.

It was a difficult decision to make, because we had some really great photos, but eventually we had to choose Markian Senyk who sent us these great photos of Pulpit Rock at Lysefjorden, Norway. He was chosen because of the originality of the landmark, and because poor Mark had to trek for two hours on foot to get there, What’s On in hand. These are beautiful photographs and Mark thoroughly deserves his two free return tickets to any UIA destination. And it is quite possibly, and predominantly, for that reason that the tourism industry continues to make a profit despite the market crashes and crisis panics. Associated with fun and happiness, Maslyanitsa is meant to represent the return of the sun. All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. There is an epigraph of Shakespeare’s somewhere that could fit this maxim which is something that he, along with the characters in this play, would both have had in common. This musical and dramatic fantasy tells the story of a bright and charismatic southern city by the sea. But it is made all the better for composer Raymond Pauls who also accompanies this small theatre. The music itself is miraculous, flamboyant and almost unrecognisable which is exactly what it is supposed to be, as it is an echo of Odesa itself. So as he plays, the actors act and sing: “Long live the king, the pregnant girls and the rowdy sailors; down with death, the KGB and hunger; and let everyone dance, drink and be merry!”

This Russian rock band’s name derives from the title of a poem by Sasha Chorny; which in turn was borrowed from the English word spleen; which, aside from being an organ in the human body that assists with functions of the blood, also denotes depression. Being huge fans of The Beatles, they swapped an E for an A in their name, allowing them to enjoy almost as much popularity in the 14 years they’ve been on stage. While their songs tend to be rather melancholic, they have been able to make a whole whack of albums and one of their biggest coups so far, has been winning the award for Best Video at the 2009 MTV Russian Music Awards.

Kyiv City Administration’s street renaming committee head Lidiya Ponamarenko told Kyiv’s Segnodnya newspaper on Feb. 1, “We want to rename a street currently named for a pro-Soviet activist: either Uritskoho Street or Vorovskoho Street. While it seems abhorrent that Yanukovych could become the president of this great nation, it seems likely now that he will. And the alternative – the woman who shone like the nation’s angel only 5 years ago – has now proven that in all actuality she’s not much better. If I were able to vote here, I have to say I would find it very hard to choose between the two. I couldn’t in good conscience vote for either of them, and the only thing that would force my hand in favour of Tymoshenko would be just to keep Yanukovych and his Russian-leaning oligarchs out. This thought was somewhat reinforced recently, when a Ukrainian friend told me he was going to vote for Tymoshenko because he would be embarrassed to have Yanukovych as the head of state. ]]> Editorial 8044 http://www.whatson-kiev.com?go=News&in=view&id=8044 A Director with a Difference Thu, 28 Jan 2010 22:16:49 +0200 Once labeled young and cheap – as a director that is – this girl while still young, is far from sale-priced these days. There is one exception she follows, however, and that relates to penniless talent, at which point Katya Tsarik has been known to abandon price lists and indulge the aspiring starlet. Just as happy to indulge us for a short while, What’s On was able to hook up with this young woman who calls the shots behind the scenes.
Cute and innocent-looking, Lviv-born Katya Tsarik made her way into Ukrainian show-business as a video director just four years ago…

So upon deciding to dedicate this issue to India – its custom, its food and its culture – there has been a buzz going on in the office all week; arranging photo shoots, interviews and restaurant reviews. And having gone through the first pages to get to these last, you should now be well versed in the number of ways this influential population continues to affect this country. It is astounding. And in fact, who knew?

The photo was sent to us by Olga Kulik who swears that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abrahm Lincoln were all bigs fans of What’s On Kyiv. Our second entry is from Arlington Texas and the new home of the Dallas Cowboys. Sent to us by Patricia Riatti, the photo shows the new stadium this top American football team created. Of course, while the defense is on the pitch, the offense read What’s On, and vice versa. There’s not much else to do at a game of American football anyway, is there?

This is a man thing. It’s a machismo competition to see who can eat the spiciest dishes and the hottest sauces without breaking into a sweat, and can wash it all down with the largest amount of beer and still be capable of hitting a club after. This is a man thing. No women allowed. While we’re doing this, you stay home with your knitting and an episode of Sex in the City.

8038 http://www.whatson-kiev.com?go=News&in=view&id=8038 Addicted to Fashion Thu, 28 Jan 2010 21:37:00 +0200 During Soviet times, there was no access to western television channels, the internet was only an imagined thing, and even global fashion magazines were a kind of a luxury, if not a dream. Now, however, with open borders and unleashed consumerism, local fashionistas are making sure that they look just like cover models in top western rags. The fact that they look fashionable is irrefutable: Whether they look good, however, is another question.
Kyiv is full of fashion junkies and this is something that remains unchanged regardless of the constant rollercoaster of affordability. Local Paris Hiltons, Rihannas and Lindsay Lohans all try their best to stand out in the sea that is our capital’s fashion world; ensuring they adhere to the preconception that Kyivlankas (at least according to Ukrainian men and foreign tourists) are the most beautiful girls in the world.
